Let's Get Ready for Kindergarten
Help your child "get ready" for the big day! Miss Kerri recommends the following tips and library resources to ease the transition to Kindergarten. In preparation for Kindergarten: -Read to your child everyday! While reading, point out sounds and letters. Talk about what they see or hear in the story. -Encourage children to take turns, be patient, share toys, and work through any issues that may arise in a positive manner. -Work on large and small motor skills. Large motor includes, running, jumping, and hopping, while small motor focuses on the ability to hold a crayon, cut with scissors or use a utensil. Top tip: Playing with playdough is a great way to develop small motor skills! -Give children the opportunity to make choices, such as what to wear for the day, or their goodnight story. This helps to boost their confidence and feel secure in their decisions. -Count everything!! Practice sorting items according to their sizes, shapes and colours, then count the number in each group. -Give them every opportunity to practice “self help” skills. This may include dressing themselves, brushing their own teeth, putting on their shoes, making their own snack or helping clean their room. As the first day approaches: -Visit the school as often as you can. Whether that’s just for a walk to the school to see the school yard and door through which they will enter. This will all become very familiar to them for when the “big day” arrives. -Establish a morning routine that you will follow each day of school. This allows your child to know what to expect as they navigate the morning. -Always talk about school in a “positive” manner: school is fun and exciting, you can make new friends and play with different toys! Remind them that school is a special play, just for them. Enjoy this new adventure!
